2024 INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY: Bello-Koko Bags WCO Award, Celebrates Customs and Port Community System.
By Izuchukwu Ozoemena
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has restated that the current level of cooperation and collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is already yielding the desired dividends as there is noticeable reduction in cargo dwell-time and waiting time of vessels at the seaports. It also shows that with responsible synergy, port congestion can be drastically reduced if not completely eliminated.
NPA Managing Director, Mohamed Bello- Koko stated this in Lagos, Friday, at the occasion of the 2024 International Customs Day celebration whose theme was ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose’.
Bello-Koko who, at this occasion, received a Merit Award from the World Customs Organisation (WCO) for ‘rendering exceptional services to the international Customs community’ also spoke glowingly about a Port Community System (PCS) his agency is working out with the support of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and technical guidance of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
If this system is deployed in the port sector, he proposed, it will pave way for the emergence of a Single National Window which he described as important towards achieving port efficiency and, ultimately, competitiveness of the seaports.
Bello-Koko’s award endorsed by the WCO Secretary-General, Mr. Ian Saunders, was presented to him by the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, ably assisted by the Comptroller- General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
Speaking on the recently-inaugurated Lekki Deep-sea Port, Bello hailed the joint commitment of NPA and the NCS to reposition Nigeria as a transshipment centre to serve her maritime needs and those of landlocked African neighbours.
“This alignment of vision portends great fortunes for trade facilitation and national prosperity. Maximizing the opportunities inherent in our littoral assets as a maritime nation heavily depends on this collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service”, Bello-Koko observed.
He described the theme of the 2024 International Customs Day: ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose’ as significant for the NPA.
“We’re already recording gains in our collaboration with Customs, which has led to reduction in cargo dwell time and waiting time of vessels and ultimately reduced port congestion”.
“This collaboration further boosts our commitment to the deployment of Port Community System with the support of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy with the technical guidance of the IMO. The PCS is germane in promoting efficiency and making our ports competitive, as it clears the ground for the deployment of Single National Window.”
Among other landmark achievements since his appointment as MD/CEO of the NPA, Bello-Koko has championed increased collaboration and cooperation with other relevant stakeholders and partners, especially the Nigeria Customs Service.
This led to the creation of dedicated Customs commands and Export Processing Terminals at various seaports licensed and certified by the NPA as part of measures to grow Nigeria’s non-oil exports.

The Dredgers Association of Nigeria (DAN) has distanced itself from a report entitled ‘Dredgers Association Appeals to Sanwo-Olu Over Alleged Extortion, Urges Governor to Call Alebiosu, Cardozo to Order’, published on October 23, 2026 by some online blogs.
In a disclaimer jointly signed by Batare Akpomejero and Richard Ntan, National President and Secretary respectively, the Association categorically stated that the publication is fake and could not have originated from its National Leadership or any authorised organ of the dredgers’ body.
DAN clarified that it neither authorised, approved nor issued any petition or press release accusing Hon. Ekundayo Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Lagos State, and Mr. Cardozo of harassment, intimidation or extortion of dredgers and tipper operators.
The Association further stated that it had no record of the alleged impounding of trucks and demand for ₦500,000 as reported in the publication, adding that it completely dissociated itself from the claims.
Reaffirming its relationship with the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, DAN described its engagement with the government and the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development as cordial and collaborative.
On matters relating to dredging regulations and the interpretation of Supreme Court judgments concerning shoreline authority, the Association explained that discussions were being pursued through appropriate institutional channels and dialogue with relevant federal and state authorities, rather than through media confrontations.
Consequently, DAN has disclaimed the report in its entirety, urging the public, the Lagos State Government, Hon. Alebiosu and other stakeholders to disregard the publication as a statement issued on behalf of the Association.
DAN also expressed regret over any embarrassment, inconvenience or reputational damage the publication may have caused the Lagos State Government, the Honourable Commissioner and other officials mentioned.
It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting lawful, sustainable and collaborative dredging operations across Nigeria, while maintaining constructive engagement with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
